Hendersonville student earns Fulbright scholarship to Austria

Neil Varble of Hendersonville wants to learn more about history through the eyes of people in the trenches. His specialty is German soldiers in World War Two. The Volunteer State Community College graduate will take that interest to Austria this year as part of the Fulbright scholarship program.

“It’s through the Austrian Ministry of Education,” Varble said. “I’ll be teaching English in Vienna. I’ll also be furthering my research on the German Army. I’m interested in letters and correspondence from the Eastern Front, back home to families in Germany.”

The Fulbright is a U.S. State Department program designed to promote international learning with American students. Varble completed his associate of arts degree with Vol State in 2003 and finished his bachelor’s degree at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He just finished his master’s degree in European history. His thesis topic is German history.

“What interests me is the propaganda and control of the people, and trying to find some good in the German people at that time,” said Varble. “I’m only scratching the surface. I want to find how ordinary people could convince themselves that certain minorities were below them, beneath them.”

Varble will be staying with a host family in a town north of Vienna.
